Barney Stanley Butler, Sr., 88 of Nahunta, passed away Wednesday morning (August 21, 2013) at The Health Center at Standifer Place in Chattanooga, TN., following an extended illness. Born in Oconee County, SC. His parents were Hilliard and Stella Morgan Butler. He was also preceded in death by 3 daughters, Sarah Hagget, Mary Lindsey, and Barbara McGill; 2 brothers, Clarence Butler and Charlie Butler; 3 sisters, Lavada Johnson, Francess Young, and Gladys Howard. Barney served in the United States Air Force and the United States Navy, and was a Protestant minister for over 60 years. He loved preaching, singing, helping people. Also he enjoyed the mountains, fishing, and painting. Survivors include his wife, Betty Johns Butler, of Nahunta; 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Barney S. Butler, Jr. (Nancy), of Jesup, and Jerome Mathis, of Waycross; 4 daughters, Cheryl Butler, of Greenville, SC, Debra Underwood, of TN, Connie Branch, of TN, and Amy Herrington, of Waycross; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. Also several nieces, nephews, and other relatives, and many friends. A Visitation will be held Friday evening (August 23, 2013) from 6-8PM at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday (August 24, 2013) at 2 PM at Frye Funeral Home with Rev. Otis Johns, Rev. Ion Johns, and Rev. John Cleveland officiating. Memorialization will be by cremation.
