St. Simons Island – David Larry Knox, Sr., 74, of St. Simons Island, GA passed away early Thursday morning (November 30, 2023) at Landmark Hospital in Savannah, GA.
David was born on March 11, 1949 in Brantley County, GA; the first child of the late David Junior Knox and Muriel Jean Proctor Spikes.
After graduating from Nahunta High School in 1967, David served in the National Guard from 1968-1969 and then the Army Reserves for 7 years.
HE attended both Brunswick Junior College and the University of Georgia, where he earned a degree in Banking and Finance.
After college, David worked in banking with various banks and credit unions. He was a past board member of Georgia Bankers Association and was President & CEO of his first bank at 28 years old.
Of recent, David was an insurance agent with Farmers Insurance and a representative with The Hershey Company. In his spare time, David loved to golf, watch college football and go bicycling.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and served in various positions with local civic organizations.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald T. Knox and Gary “Gene” Knox; a stepmother, Gertie Knox; stepfather, Bobby Spikes; stepbrother, Lannis Maddox; and 2 sisters-in-law, Trixie Knox and Clarice Knox.
David is survived by his two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jason Knox (Caryn) of Waycross and J.R. Knox of Hoboken; and their mother, Cheri Knox Griffin of Hoboken; his grandchild who called him “Poppy”, Braedyn “Redmond” Bell; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne Knox (Gail) of Brunswick, Donald Knox of Nahunta; Ricky Knox of Manor, Earl Knox (Trina) of Kingsland and Joe Knox (Bonnie) of Nahunta; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Nelda Manning (Bob) of Fernandina Beach, FL, Ann Horne (Dennis) of Kingsland and Trisha Trouille (Alton) of Hilliard, FL; a sister-in-law, Diane Knox of Waynesville; three stepsisters, Dell Canaday (Steve) of St. George, Brenda Johnson and Sabrinna Flowers (Abe) all of Nahunta; a step sister-in-law, LaDonna Maddox of Nahunta; step daughter, Jennifer Shelton (Chris) of Raleigh, NC; stepson, David Bolden (Ivy) of Savannah and their mother Lynn Knox of Savannah; his personal close friend, Beverly Day; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held Monday (December 4, 2023) from 12:30pm – 2pm at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
A funeral service will be held Monday (December 4, 2023) at 2pm at the chapel of Frye Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Knox, Rev. Randy Wainright and Rev. Ray McMillan officiating. Burial will follow in Enon Cemetery in Blackshear.
Pallbearers will be his nephews; Carl Horne, Jeremy Davis, Ben Knox, Gary Eugene Knox, Timmy Knox, Mike Trouille, Gary Elwood Knox and Chae Pohoreskey.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Freeman, Sammy Tostensen, Paul Talley, Glenn King and Andy Johnson.
Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
