Hortense – Debra Johnson Steed, 69 of Hortense passed away early Sunday morning (May 19, 2024) at Hospice of the Golden Isles after an extended illness.

Born in Jesup, GA and raised in Brunswick, GA her parents were Otto Johnson and Helen Ricks Hardin. She is also preceded in death by an infant son; an infant daughter; her stepmother, Evelyn Johnson; her stepfather, Lou Hardin; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gus and Laura Steed.

After graduating Glynn Academy High School in 1972, she moved to Hortense, GA. Debbie graduated from Armstrong College and went on to be a teacher at Brantley County Middle School until she retired. She was a loving wife, mother, Granny, sister and friend. Debbie was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed reading, playing math puzzles and most of all spending time with Carter and Millie. She will be missed deeply by all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Jim B. Steed of Hortense; son and daughter-in-law, William Steed (Viva) of Hortense; her grandchildren, who were the light of her life, Carter Steed and Amelia “Millie” Steed both of Hortense; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law, Julie Johnson Thorn (Dennis) of Hortense and Helen Cali of Salt Lake City, UT; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Chip Johnson (Elizabeth) of Darien and Jesse Johnson (Christi) of Brunswick; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill Steed (Barbara) of Brunswick; stepmother, Dorothy Johnson of Brunswick; her nieces and nephews, Joseph E. Thomas (Melissa), Joanna Thomas Worth (Morris), Anna Johnson, Abby Johnson Fultz, Teaghan Johnson, Piper Johnson, Ashley Thorn McCloskey (Matt), Brandice Thorn (Rob Scott), Tori Hollingsworth, Bodie Hollinsworth, Guy Steed, and Spencer Steed; and also numerous great nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Tuesday (May 21, 2024) from 1pm – 2pm at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday afternoon (May 21, 2024) at 2pm at the chapel of Frye Funeral Home with Bro. Joseph E. Thomas officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525.

Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
