Hortense-Eddie "Gus" Augustus Steed, 98, of Hortense, died late Sunday night (February 5, 2012) at Bayview Nursing Home following an extended illness. Born in Fitzgerald, Ga, his parents were Eddie Augustus, Sr., and Janie House Steed. He is also preceded in death by his loving wife, Laura Jim Brown Steed, two brothers and a sister. Eddie was a member of the First Methodist Church in Brunswick, and also a member of the Hortense Fishing Club. He was a retired Lab Technician from the pulpmill, and served as a Master Sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps and served in WWII. Survivors include 2 sons and daughter-in-laws, William E. and Barbara Steed, and Jim and Debra Steed, both of Hortense; 3 grandchildren, Spencer Steed, Guy Steed, and William and Viva Steed; 2 great grandchildren, Carter, and Amelia Steed, all of Hortense. Also several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening (February 7, 2012) from 6PM-8PM, at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta. A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday afternoon (February 8, 2012) at 2:00PM, at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta, with Rev. Jerry Johns officiating.Burial will follow in the Hortense Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Guy Steed, Spencer Steed, William Steed, Hymerick Thomas, Forest Thomas, and Reggie O'berry. Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
