Nahunta – Gladys Marie Dukes Strickland, 85, of Nahunta passed away Thursday afternoon (April 29, 2021) at Bayview Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Born in Pearson, GA her parents were Arthur L. and Mary Cowart Dukes. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Keith Strickland; and a son, Kenneth Strickland.
Gladys was a retired bank teller and a member of Southside Baptist Church. Gladys and her husband Keith opened the first modern convenient store, grocery store and shopping plaza in Nahunta. She was also the owner of the Huddle House in Nahunta and loved sewing and doing flower arrangements for the church.
Survivors include 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Rick & Sandy Strickland of St. Simons Island and Ron Strickland of Nahunta; 7 grandchildren and their spouses, Eric & Barbie Strickland, Kayla Strickland, Allyson & Miles Lee, Blake & Kirby Strickland, Kelsey Strickland, Zach Strickland and Jared Strickland; 4 great grandchildren, Lauren Strickland, Brooke Strickland, Rowan Lee and Coleman Strickland; Her house keeper of 30 years, Ginni Kicklighter and also several other relatives and a host of friends.
Due to COVID-19, we would like to ask all to please follow the rules for social distancing, also face mask are highly recommended at the service. Anyone who does not feel comfortable with attending the service the family would like you to know they understand and covet your prayers.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Sunday (May 2, 2021) from 2pm-3pm at Southside Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held Sunday afternoon (May 2, 2021) at 3pm at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Johns and Rev. Jimmy Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in Smyrna Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Andy Johns, Tom Brooks, Jared Strickland, Zach Strickland, Blake Strickland, and Miles Lee. Honorary pallbearers will be Janine Lane, Dr. A.W.”Wade” Strickland and the Women’s Ministry of Southside Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Southside Baptist Church.
Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
