Folkston – James Earley “J.E.” Herrin, 89, of Folkston passed away early Saturday morning (July 18, 2020) at his residence after an extended illness.
Born in Hickox, GA his parents were Jeff Herrin and Stella O’Quinn Herrin. He is also preceded in death by 7 siblings, Jeremiah C. “JC” Herrin, Velera Williams, Homer Herrin, Huland Herrin, Eula Mae Lee, Creola Woods and Ethleen Herrin.
J.E. was a retired Sergeant First Class for the Army and a member of Riverside Chapel Baptist Church. He graduated Nahunta High School in 1947 and attended ABAC before joining the Army June 18, 1948 to June 21, 1954 then reenlisted September 15, 1958 to August 31, 1972 and while in the Army he earned many Army Commendation medals and merit awards. On July 20, 1994, he became a deacon at Riverside Chapel Baptist Church. He also enjoyed fishing, farming and watching the Braves.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Maude Herrin of Folkston; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Karen Stokes of Folkston and Kimberly & David “Bean” Johns of Waycross; a granddaughter, Amanda & Michael DePratter of Folkston; a grandson, DJ Johns of Waycross; 2 great grandchildren that were the light of his life, Holton DePratter & Ellery DePratter of Folkston; 2 sisters, Colleen Moody and Clarice Herrin of Hickox; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Due to the COVID-19, the family would like to ask all to please follow the rules for social distancing and face mask are recommended at visitation and the service. Also, anyone who does not feel comfortable with attending the services the Family would like for you to know they understand and covet your prayers.
Visitation will be held Sunday evening (July 19, 2020) starting at 6PM at Riverside Chapel Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held Monday morning (July 20, 2020) at 11AM at Riverside Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Wainright and Rev. Lamar Music officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jeffery Johns, Clark Lyons, DJ Johns, Michael DePratter, Ronnie Wainright, Jerry Herrin and Harley “Smitty” Montelongo. Honorary pallbearers will be Pete O’Berry and Scamp Thrift.
The family would like to thank Mr. J.E.'s caregiver from Visiting Angel's, Charese Kicklighter for her unfailing devotion and loving care for him and her helping the family has been over and above any of their expectations.
Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
