James 'Jim' Wallace Shaw, Sr.

James Wallace Shaw, Sr., of Nahunta, Georgia died January 19, 2016, after an extended illness. Dr. Shaw was born in Jackson, Mississippi on January 7, 1934, to Wallace Lafayette Shaw and O’Nell Cockrell. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Patricia L. Shaw, his son James Wallace Shaw, Jr. and wife, Julia Nell of Perry, Georgia, and his daughter Mara O’Nell Shaw of Bishop, Georgia. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Catheryn Shaw of Greensboro, North Carolina, Claire Shaw Fermin and husband Jeremy of Hinesville, Georgia, Peggy Peterson of LaGrange, Georgia, and Jim Shaw, III, of Perry, Georgia.

Dr. Shaw was a practicing pharmacist for more than fifty years. He was a graduate of Mercer School of Pharmacy and earned his Doctorate in Pharmacy from the College of the Americas. Prior to his work in this field, he served his country on active duty with the United States Navy, and retired with an Honorable Discharge from the Army National Guard after more than twenty-three years of service. During his active duty service, Dr. Shaw had the privilege in 1955 of participating in Operation Deep Freeze aboard the U.S.S. Glacier. This deployment was the last expedition by Admiral Richard E. Byrd to the South Pole. Prior to leaving active duty, he served as the Chief I.C. on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Independence. After leaving active duty, Dr. Shaw completed his education and he began his distinguished career in pharmacy in South Georgia in 1965. He was first affiliated with his father-in-law, Dr. M.E. Long, at Long’s Drug Store in Baxley and he became owner in 1968. He briefly retired from this field from 1976 until 1980, at which time he worked in Iraq and El Salvador in overseeing industrial construction projects. His love for pharmacy and the connection to his customers brought him back into the field in 1980 when he opened Nahunta Drugs in Nahunta. He was later affiliated with Satilla Institutional Pharmacy in Waycross, and several other independent pharmacies in the area. He remained active as a relief pharmacist until his death.

In his spare time, Dr. Shaw was an avid pilot, possessing a commercial pilot’s license, and he always loved to fish, especially with his grandson, Jim. Dr. Shaw had no greater love than his Lord, his wife, and his family. He always took great pride in the accomplishments of his two children and daughter-in-law, and all of his grandchildren. Dr. Shaw impacted so many lives in the South Georgia area, and he leaves a legacy of honorable service to his country and compassion for his fellow man.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening (January 21, 2016) from 6PM-8PM at Southside Baptist Church in Nahunta.

A funeral service will be held Friday afternoon (January 22, 2016) at 1PM at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Johns, Rev. Charles Florey, Rev. Marty Chase and Dr. Tim Catchings officiating.

Burial will be at 4PM at Ebenezer Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Glennville, GA.

Pallbearers will be Jim Shaw, III, Jeremy Fermin, Keith Hayes, J.W. Edwards, Stetson Bennett, and Kenny McCarthy.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mark McGregor, Ronald Reagin, Dr. Lina Harper, David Herrin, Wain Brooker, Dan Smith, Chris Carbaugh,Ted Shuman, Randy Wheeler, and Terri Waters.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to American Lung Association at 2452 Spring Rd S.E. Smyrna, GA 30080, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.

Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
