Hortense – John Cleveland Smith, 74, of Hortense passed away early Friday morning (April 23, 2021) at his residence after an extended illness.
Born in Fort Payne, AL his parents were Charles Ray Smith and Mary U. Hastings Smith. He is also preceded in death by his son, Kevin Smith; a granddaughter, Ashley Burkett; and a brother, Charlie Smith.
John was an executive for AT&T for 46years and served in the United States Navy. He was a member of Nahunta First Baptist Church and was a loving devoted husband and father. John was an excellent cook and loved gardening and growing plants.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Sharron Smith of Hortense; a son & daughter-in-law, Brian & Tina Smith of Birmingham, AL; a daughter and son-in-law, Dena & Craig Hayes of Tuscaloosa, AL; 7 grandchildren, Mandi, Brittani, Summer, Kari, Brandon, Cheynne and Zachary; 5 great grandchildren, Charlie, Melanie, Waylon, Grant and Anslee; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Due to COVID-19, we would like to ask all to please follow the rules for social distancing, also face mask are highly recommended at the service. Anyone who does not feel comfortable with attending the service the family would like you to know they understand and covet your prayers.
Visitation will be held Sunday evening (April 25, 2021) from 6pm to 8pm at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
A funeral service will be held Monday morning (April 26, 2021) at 11am at the chapel of Frye Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Carson officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jason White, Brandon Hayes, Colby White, Larry “Possum” Corbitt, Caleb Smith, and Griffin Adams.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of John Smith to Coastal Hospice, 1700 Frederica Rd Suite 205 St. Simons Island, GA 31522.
Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
