Waynesville – John Conn Nix, 88 of Waynesville passed away Friday morning (July 15, 2022) at his residence. He lived a full and enjoyable life with his family and friends.
John was born September 1, 1933, in Brunswick, GA where he attended school and graduated from Glynn Academy in the Class of 1951. John was born and reared on a dairy farm in Glynn County and later owned and operated Community Dairy. He also was a member of Golden Isle Dairy Coop (Coastal Daries). His first job out of high school was driving a Nehi and R.C. Drink Truck until he got a job with Brunswick Pulp and Paper Company in 1952, where he worked until 1974 as a pipefitter.
In 1967, John bought a farm on the Old Post Road in Waynesville, Brantley County and in 1969 he moved there and spent most of the rest of his life on the farm where he really enjoyed cutting hay, raising beef cattle and market hogs along with his previous wife Corina and their children. They also owned and operated Waynesville Grocery, The Coffee Shop and The Waynesville Station and Garage. John also served on the Brantley County Board of Commissioners in the latter part of the 1970s. After retiring in 1984, he and his previous wife took an extended vacation, traveling and visiting family and friends. But he soon got restless and decided to go back to work. In 1989, he went to work for Jekyll Island Authority in Golf Course maintenance and soon became the Golf Course maintenance assistant superintendent. He finally retired for good on July 1, 2003.
John was a member and attended Waynesville Baptist Church. John was a Master Mason, E.M. Member for F & AM Ocean #214, Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Georgia, Grand Commandery, Knights Templar of Georgia and Knights Templar Eye Foundation Inc.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his previous wives, Elizabeth Ann Church and Corina Nix; two sons, John L. Nix and Tony H. Nix; a son-in-law, Kenny Popwell; 2 sisters, Elizabeth Knight and Mary Turner; 2 brothers, Grandville Nix and William “Buddy” Nix; 5 brothers-in-law, Lester Knight, Mike Micheals, A.D. Turner, Lendon Naves and James Morgan.
Survivors include his wife, Liz Baker Nix of Waynesville ; 2 daughters, Betty Nold (Denis) of Minnesota and Priscilla Popwell of Hortense; a son, Irving Nix of Waynesville; his stepson, Roland Kennedy (Marty) of Houston, TX; 3 sisters, Marion Micheals of Brunswick, Delores Burns (Bobby) of Callahan and Jean Morgan of Waynesville; 17 grandchildren, Roslyn Nix, Kristie Weber Popwell, Candace Popwell, Phillip Popwell, Matthew Nold (Melissa), Corina Jean Miller (Dan), Tina Richter (Dan), Sheila Gunterburg (Craig), Earl Ribron (Suzanne), Michael Ribron (Sandy), Lesia Grogg (Bill), and Brittney Oglesby (Brent), Tricia Rogers (Steven), Felicia Nix, Tony Nix, Jr. (Tina), John Michael Kennedy (Julie), and Shauna Kennedy; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held Tuesday evening (July 19, 2022) from 6pm- 8pm at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday morning (July 20, 2022) at 11am at Waynesville Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Wainright and Rev. Joe Carr officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Culver, Gary Turner, Randy Turner, Todd Morgan, Cliff Morgan and David Naves. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Wade Strickland and staff, Dave Turner, Steven “Rock” Morgan, Leonard Clark, Jimmy Elliott, Kyle Bragg, Donnie Aldridge, Elton Yawn, Tim Ferrell and Ricky Whittington.
Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
