Hortense – Joseph “Joe” Jefferson Smith, 95, of Hortense passed away early Thursday morning (February 18, 2021) at his residence after a brief illness.
Born in Raybon, GA his parents were Charlie Smith and Myrtis Dixon Smith. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Iris Middleton Smith; a son, Byron Smith, 2 grandsons, Chadwick Lewis and Luke Davis; 3 brothers, Barney Smith, Harry Smith and Claude Smith; and a sister, Marion Smith.
Mr. Joe was a boilermaker for the local #199 and served in the United States Army. He was a member of Hortense Wesleyan Church and enjoyed sports.
Survivors include his 5 children and their spouses, Evangeline Crews, Gloria Davis (Ronald), Wynell Lewis (Charles) all of Hortense, Barrett Smith (Monnie) of TN and Darryl Smith of Hortense; 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 3 sisters and brothers-in-law, Hilda McMonigle and Rosemary Strickland (Wade) all of Brunswick and Jean Thomas (Arthur) of Nahunta; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Mr. Joe will have a private burial.
