Lewis 'Carroll' Batten

March 11, 1923 — April 26, 2017

Nahunta – Lewis “Carroll” Batten, 94, of Nahunta passed away early Wednesday morning (April 26, 2017) at his residence after an extended illness.

Born in Hickox, GA his parents were James and Viola O’Neal Batten. He is preceded in death by the love of his life and the mother of his children, his wife of 57 years, Frances Knight Batten; his second wife, Treva Patten Batten; son, George Batten; and 3 brothers, Charlie Batten, Jimmy Batten and Eddie Foy Batten.

Carroll served in the United States Army during WWII where he was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 bronze stars and was a boilermaker for 29 years for B & W, where he loved to work. He was a farmer and a member of Winokur Baptist Church where he was a deacon, chairman of the deacons and a Sunday school teacher until his health declined. Mr. Carroll was a Godly man of great faith who loved his family and his church family. He was a dedicated husband to the love of his life of 57 years, Frances Batten, and took pride in his family that he was so proud of. In his early years, Mr Carroll loved to hunt and fish. Also, he loved farming and was a hard working honest man. You could believe whatever he said. He was just a man of his word.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Lynn & Laverne Batten of Statesboro; 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn & Everett Lee, Linda & Read Carter, and Bonnie & Tom Howard all of Nahunta. 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Lea & Jason Lanier, Rev. Laura & Rev. Andy Hart, John & Caryn Lee, Carroll & Laurie Lee, Connie & Rev. Vance Colley, Carole Ann & Richard Gill, Mary & Ed Lowther, Michelle & Keith Pickren, Reada & Christopher Harris, Susan & Rev. Frank Thomas, Rev. Chuck & Jennifer Allen, Melynda & Ben Wainwright, Annie Jacobs-Howard, and Darla & Greg Skipper; 38 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren;a sister, Nancy Winn of Nahunta; and also several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening (April 27, 2017) starting at 6PM at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.

A funeral service will be held Friday afternoon (April 28, 2017) at 3PM at Winokur Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Manning, Rev. Monroe Gill and Rev. Chuck Allen officiating.

Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery with military honors.

Pallbearers will be John Lee, Carroll Lee, Walker Gill, Austin Colley, James Allen, and Lee Wainwright.

The family would like to thank Melynda & Ben Wainwright for being loving caregivers for Mr. Carroll for the past 2 ½ years.

Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
