Hortense- Mary Lee Whitley Deen, 64 of Hortense died Tuesday afternoon (September 6, 2011) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Douglas, GA her parents were Jesse James and Ethel Wright Whitley. She is also preceded in death by her husband, James Owen Deen, a son, Danny Deen; 2 brothers, Tommy Whitley and Johnny Whitley; and a sister, Betty Jones. Mary was a homemaker and of the Christian faith. Also she loved her life with her family and grandchildren and enjoyed fishing, gardening and flowers. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Amon & Shounda Griffin of Waynesville; 3 daughters and 2 son-in-laws, Deannia Griffin Roberson of Brunswick, Pamela & Johnny Dutka, Karen & Kevin Edgy all of Waynesville; 10 grandchildren, Mikey Griffin, Mitch Griffin, Amon Griffin, Carrie Griffin, Emilee Roberson, Zachry Dutka, Colby Dutka, Robert Middleton(Alisha), Whitley Dean, and Ridge Stokes; 4 brothers and sisters-in-law, David & Nell Whitley of Alabama, Lonny & Inez Whitley and Mitchell & Sheila Whitley all of Douglas and Carl & Alene Whitley of Nichols; 4 sisters and brothers-in-law, Laverne Cliett of Broxton, Nellie & Don Cleckner of Palm Harbor, FL, Sandi & Oscar Patton of Douglas and Gerti & Fred Bellenbaum of Atkinson; and also several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Visitation will be held Thursday evening (September 8, 2011) starting at 6PM at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta. A funeral service will be held Friday afternoon (September 9, 2011) at 12PM at the chapel of Frye Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Batten officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Waynesville. Pallbearers will be Jack Snow, Robert Middleton, Andy Thomas, Thomas Whitley, Timmy Whitley and Daren Buchanon. Honorary pallbearers will be Katie Poole, Breena Willis, Jorah Bellenbaum, August Williams, Andrew Kirk and Ciara Wilson. Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
