Richard 'Dick' Henry Schmitt

January 22, 1927 — October 23, 2019

Trudie Community – Richard “Dick” Henry Schmitt, 92, of Trudie passed away early Wednesday morning (October 23, 2019) at his residence after an extended illness.

Born in Chicago, IL his parents were Alfred William Schmitt and Kathryn Henrietta Skow Schmitt. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Iris Sawyer Schmitt; a son-in-law, Tom West; and a special cousin, Betty Sundburg.

Dick was a forester for Brunswick Pulp and Land Company for 37 years and served in the United States Navy as a Pharmacist’s Mate. He graduated from Walnut High School in Walnut, IL and attended Cornel of Iowa and Michigan State where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry. Dick was a member of the Nahunta United Methodist Church and enjoyed woodworking, gardening and watching birds.

Survivors include his 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Al Schmitt (Sherry) of Trudie and Andy Schmitt (Paula) of Poulan, GA; 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia McHugh (Bob) of Milton, GA, Kathryn West of Mt. Juliet, TN and Marian Smith (Mitch) of Bartow, GA; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, William “Bill” Schmitt (Toni) of Branford, CT; a brother-in-law, Billy Sawyer of Douglasville; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Saturday (October 26, 2019) from 2PM-3PM at Nahunta United Methodist Church.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday afternoon (October 26, 2019) at 3PM at Nahunta United Methodist Church with Pastor Rebecca Ramsey officiating.

Burial will follow in Twin Rivers Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

The family would like to give special thanks to Carol Sue Reddish, caregiver, and Affinis Hospice for their exceptional care.

Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
