Waverly – Robert Kenneth West, Sr., 91, of Waverly passed away Tuesday evening (September 7, 2021) at Bayview Nursing Home in Nahunta after a brief illness.
Born in Columbus, GA his parents were Paul R. West and Thelma Langly West. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Paul West, Jr.; and 2 sisters, Betty Jean Kelley and Kay Glowacki.
Robert graduated from Marietta High School where he excelled in basketball and football. He played football under head coach Wally Butts at the University of Georgia from 1949-1952 and was elected Captain of the football team in 1952. Robert graduated from the University of Georgia and for a short time played football for the Chicago Cardinals. He then joined the United States Air Force where he became a Lieutenant. He later retired as a district manager for Cotton States Insurance.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce West of Waverly; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Robert K. West, Jr. (Phyllis) of Douglas and Kerry L. West (Wendy) of Millwood; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Dawn Redman of Loveland, OH and Holly Goebel (Dale) of Douglas; 3 stepchildren and their spouses, Cynthia Hollingsworth (Gene), Sylvia Adams (John) and William “Cal” Smith, III; 9 grandchildren, Ken West, III (Rose), Brandon West (Kalani), Anna Smith (Shaun), Miranda Adams (Jeremy), Nicholas Fender (Kayla), Kaila McCallum (Kory), Eddie Redman, Amanda Bailey (Neil) and Radonya Kettles (Tom); 6 step-grandchildren, Melody Rose Barber, Aletha Mann, John Blake Adams, Sterling Rose, Benjamin Adams, and Matthew Hollingsworth; many great grandchildren; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held thirty minutes prior to the service on Friday afternoon (September 10, 2021) from 2:30pm – 3PM at Homeward Cemetery.
A graveside service will be held Friday afternoon (September 10, 2021) at 3pm at Homeward Cemetery with Rev. Randy Wainright officiating.
Due to COVID-19, we would like to ask all to please follow the rules for social distancing, also face mask are highly recommended at the service. Anyone who does not feel comfortable with attending the service the family would like you to know they understand and covet your prayers.
