Hickox – Mrs. Tressa Mae Highsmith Johns, 88, of Hickox passed away Thursday evening (April 14, 2022) at her residence after an extended illness.
Born in Nahunta, GA, her parents were Talford Horace Highsmith and Clara Jane Woodard Highsmith. She is also preceded in death by her husband, James O. “Jay” Johns; a grandson, Barrett Johns; a great grandson, Bowen Wainright; and a brother, Byron C. “Buddy” Highsmith.
Mrs. Tressa was a retired teacher for the Brantley County Board of Education. She graduated from Georgia College for Women in Milledgeville, GA on a Mumford Fund scholarship. She later earned a Master’s degree in Education from Georgia State University in Atlanta and an Education Specialist degree from Valdosta State University.
Mrs. Tressa was a member of Hickox Baptist Church. She loved her church family and was active until her health declined. The members of her Sunday school class were very dear to her. She loved spending time with her family, especially her six grandchildren. Mrs. Tressa was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing, flower gardening, vegetable gardening, and completing crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Jacobs (Alec) of Hoboken; 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeffrey A. Johns (Judy Musgrove) of Nahunta and Gregory S. Johns (Joan F.) of Hernando, FL; 6 grandchildren, Trent Jacobs, Alecia Jacobs, Amanda Phillips, Torie Wainright, Jay Johns and Jeremy Johns; 3 great grandchildren, Stella Wainright, Eli Wainright and Jameson Phillips; and also several other relatives and a host of friends.
The family has a deep appreciation of Mrs. Tressa’s nurse of 5 years, Crystal Rios. Daily, Ms. Crystal extended compassion, kindness, friendship, dedication, and love to Mrs. Tressa. The family will always be grateful for Crystal’s devotion.
Visitation will be held Monday evening (April 18, 2022) starting at 6pm at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday morning (April 19, 2022) at 11am at Hickox Baptist Church with Rev. Ray McMillan and Bro. Larry Johns officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jay Johns, Jeremy Johns, Trent Jacobs, Liston Wainright, Shannon Phillips, and Terry Highsmith.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration of donations to Hickox Baptist Church, 7224 Caney Bay Rd, Nahunta, GA 31553 or Satilla Hospice 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, GA 31501.
Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
