Vonice Rowell Brooks

Hortense- Vonice Alge Rowell Brooks, 92 of Hortense, passed away Monday (July 3, 2023) at her residence following an extended illness.

Born in Hortense, GA her parents were B.W. Rowell and Alge Stuart Rowell. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Vincent E. “Shorty” Brooks; a daughter, Rose Middleton; a granddaughter, Sara Jane Middleton; and several siblings.

Vonice was a retired cafeteria worker for Brantley County School System and a homemaker. She was a charter member of Hortense Church of God of Prophecy and loved crafting with the Lady’s church group every Tuesday. Vonice loved spending  time with her grandchildren, serving others, watching game shows, bird watching, gardening and watching flowers grow in her flower boxes.

Survivors include her 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Vinny Brooks (Karen) of Augusta and Gary Brooks of Hortense; 8 grandchildren, Marcia Chesser (Steven), Elizabeth Anderson (Layton), Alicia Phillips (Mike), Kimber Popducev (Spasko), Amanda Mosley (Ken), Clifton Brooks, Vincent Brooks (Allison) and Ethan Brooks; 11 great grandchildren; son-in-law, Gary Middleton of Hortense; a special niece, Pat Davison (Randy) of Hortense; and also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held Thursday afternoon (July 6, 2023) from 1pm – 4pm at Hortense Church of God of Prophecy.

A funeral service will be held Friday morning (July 7, 2023) at 10am at Hortense Church of God of Prophecy with Bishop Rob Hutto and Rev. Ricky Knox officiating. Burial will follow in Hortense Cemetery.
