Hortense- William S."Bill" Rowell, 84 of Hortense, passed away early Thursday morning (February 26, 2015) at Altamaha Nursing Home, following an extended illness. The Brantley County native was a graduate of Nahunta High School in 1948. He joined the United States Navy and served 4 years from the age of 18 to 21.He then worked many years at Babcock and Wilcox in Brunswick, GA until retirement. Bill was a member of Twin Rivers Missionary Baptist Church, and he loved tinkering on lawnmowers and working in his shop. He was preceded in death by his father, Silas Rowell; 2 sons, Jon Rowell and Wayne Rowell; a sister, Vanzy Teston; and a brother, Joe Rowell. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Bettye S. Rowell, of Hortense; a son, LT. Scott Rowell; 2 grandsons, Mark Rowell of Hortense,and Matthew Rowell of Pearson; a granddaughter, Alyssa Rowell, of Pearson; his mother, Myrtle Rowell; 2 sisters, Mary Anderson, of Jesup, and Willene Clements, of Brunswick; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Truman Rowell (Marie), of Brunswick, and Mike Rowell (Pat), of Camden County. Also several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Visitation will be held Saturday (February 28, 2015) starting at 6PM at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta. A funeral service will be held Sunday afternoon (March 1, 2015) at 3PM at Twin Rivers Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Sinclair and Rev. Sheldon Rowell officiating. Burial will follow in Twin Rivers Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richard Rowell, Charles Brauda, Joey Strickland, Robert Johns, Andy Riggins, Jack Dowling, J.B. Strickland, Earl Roberson, Gary Strickland, Tim Rowell, and Wayne Strickland. Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta. Sympathy may be expressed by signing our online registry at fryefh.com.
